“Hot Topics, Cool Truths.” Finding Presence in a Distracted World

Today’s Verses:
Psalm 46:10
ESV

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

This week, we will focus on a series I call, “Hot Topics, Cool Truths.” Today’s focus is on our distracted lives and how true presence can lead to our peace.

We carry the world in our pockets—alerts, updates, opinions, crises, and commentary. From the moment we wake up, our phones pull us into the noise. News cycles spin anxiety. Social media stirs comparison. Endless opinions drown out stillness. No wonder peace feels just out of reach.

Psalm 46:10 cuts through the chaos with a clear, countercultural command:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Stillness isn’t just the absence of motion—it’s the choice to stop striving, scrolling, reacting. It’s a surrender of our need to stay plugged in. It’s where we remember who’s really in control.

This verse wasn’t written in an age of smartphones, but the truth hits harder than ever. God calls us to stop—to unplug from the stream of distractions so we can tune in to something eternal. Not just to rest, but to remember. Remember that He is God and we are not. He holds the world together. We don’t have to.

When we silence the world, we can hear His voice. And in His voice, we find peace—not because the chaos is gone, but because we know the One who rules over it.

So today, power down. Step outside. Sit in the quiet. Look someone in the eye. Listen more than you speak. And in those moments of stillness, let your soul breathe.

Because real contentment isn’t found in having all the answers—It’s found in knowing the One who does.

Prayers

A Prayer for Today:

Heavenly Father, my life is truly distracted by endless streams of videos, news, opinions. Help me this day to set this all aside and put myself in Your true presence where I can find Your love and grace and peace.  In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
